OXYGEN CUTTING

Oxygen cutting is a thermal cutting method generally used for cutting thick metal plates. This method is based on the process of combustion of metal with oxygen and is widely used, especially on ferrous metals such as steel. The oxygen cutting process is also known as oxyfuel cutting or flame cutting.

Many types of steel can be cut easily with the oxygen cutting method. Materials of different thicknesses can be cut and shaped without any difficulty using the oxygen cutting method.

How Does It Work?

  1. Heating: The piece of metal to be cut is heated to the cutting point using a fuel gas such as acetylene or propane and a flame.
  2. Oxygen Flow: When the area of the metal to be cut becomes sufficiently hot (approximately 900-1200°C), a high-pressure flow of pure oxygen is initiated.
  3. Burning and Cutting: High pressure oxygen rapidly oxidizes the metal (burning process) and the resulting iron oxide (slag) is blown away from the cutting area. This process allows the metal to be cut.

Advantages

  • Effective on Thick Metals: Oxygen cutting is particularly effective in cutting thick steel plates and can be faster than other cutting methods.
  • Low Cost: Equipment and operating costs are generally low, making oxygen cutting an economical option.
  • Portability: Oxygen cutting equipment is generally portable and easy to use for maintenance and repair work in the field.
  • Cutting Speed: It can cut quickly in suitable materials and thicknesses.

Areas of Use

  • Heavy Industry: Widely used in heavy industry applications such as shipyards, construction and mining equipment production.
  • Maintenance and Repair: Ideal for field cutting work and facility maintenance and repair work.
  • Metal Processing: It is used during the production and processing of steel structures.
  • Scrap Metal Recycling: It is frequently preferred in scrap metal cutting and recycling processes.

Oxygen cutting plays an important role in many industrial applications where thick steel plates must be cut. It is widely used in the field and factory environment due to its simplicity, cost effectiveness and portability.
